I could live without my mobile. Honest..

I’ve been at my dads all week – hence lack of posting or general web presence. You see my dad is still using BT for his net connection – and it’s pants! That and his pc needs reformatting and basically mending with a new one (which Stef will be doing as soon as I get off here)
We’ve been dog-sitting you see, well in all fairness Stef’s done all the ‘work’, I’ve been suffering a mini relapse and have spent my time either sleeping, eating or watching films. The rest has done me good though, I’m back up to a functioning level and only now am I missing the signal on my phone..
That’s right, my papa lives in a signal blackhole – if you’re lucky and the wind’s blowing just right you may have a window of a few seconds to squeeze a text through, but in all honesty if you ever visit this area you may as well just turn the damned thing off and accept that you are out of communication range for the duration.
It led to me a thought though, people of my age were probably the last generation to grow up without having instant telephone access to anyone anywhere and there was a freedom in that.
If public call boxes were as readily available now as they were 15-20 years ago I think I could quite happily go back to having just a land-line phone and my diary (although these days it’d be a PDA not a paper diary, you need something with a game on it to ease transport boredom) I rarely receive phone calls as it is and most of the time it’s someone asking for Stef anyway (because he’s always with me and has a tendency to switch his phone off) It’s text that I use for communication in the main, and lets face it – most texts need never be sent, the news can either wait or you’re just forwarding on a joke because you’re bored.. What a waste of time and money eh?!
I’ve gone from thinking a mobile phone is a necessity to a luxury in the space of a week – yet what’s the betting that come tomorrow and I’m back in ‘civilisation’ I’ll be within reach of my phone at all times once more..

Land Line? ARE YOU NUTS? All I have is my cell. Who needs a Land Line? I have my cell for local and receiving calls and when I need to call long distance I use Skype. $35 a year for all of North America is a good deal

I was just writing about how when I was growing up I had more privacy because my family and friends couldn’t reach me at all times when I was out. With the advent of cel phones, I feel I’ve lost a bit of my space because now I’m always a phone call away.
